Finding the balance

When designing a new flashlight there are many parameters to consider.
21 November, 2023

When we ask a user what are the most important attributes in a flashlight, most agree to mention: power, autonomy and weight.

As manufacturers, our main goal is to meet the needs of end users. However, these attributes are closely related and, the improvement of one is associated with the penalty of another/s.

At the base of the weighing scale to find the balance is a key element: the battery. There are many different battery technologies but the one that stands out above all in the capacity/weight ratio is lithium-ion.

Some considerations to keep in mind are:

    • Higher power = lower autonomy.
    • Higher autonomy = lower power.
    • Higher power/autonomy = higher battery capacity.
    • Higher battery capacity = higher weight.

Each one of our flashlights is born to respond to specific particularities of use. If we take as an example the model Adalit L-5RPOWER with 150 lumen, the characteristic that stands out is the lightness (only 125 gr.), and largely due to the use of a Li-Po battery. Another example is the Adalit L-30, where its main feature is the light output (350 lumen), thanks to its Li-ion battery (larger capacity but heavier than Li-Po technology).

How to meet these requirements and offer a product with the best compromise in this relationship to three, represents a challenge for our R&D department.

At Adalit, we always use the best tools at our disposal: listening to our customers’ opinions and applying cutting-edge technology.
